Onsrud 54-775 Series — Rougher-Finisher for Composites

The Onsrud 54-775 Series is a composite cutting tool built for fiber-reinforced machining. Its geometry reduces lateral pressure on the part, so fewer passes are needed for a clean cut, and a dedicated finishing segment shears composite fibers crisply instead of fraying them. Combining roughing and finishing in one tool lowers spindle load, shortens cycle times, and reduces the risk of delamination.

Flute Options

4 Flutes: 54-790, 54-792, 54-776, 54-778 — high chip clearance for heavy material removal and rapid evacuation.

6 Flutes: 54-780, 54-782, 54-783 — for work where surface detail is critical.

8 Flutes: 54-784, 54-785, 54-786 — engineered for edge durability and uniform finishing on precision work.

Nanosphere Coating

Every cutting edge carries a Nanosphere coating, which resists abrasive wear from fiber-reinforced material and extends usable tool life. Where uptime matters, it reduces how often tools need changing and helps hold edge sharpness through longer runs.

Applications

The flute geometry supports slotting, plunging, ramping and contouring with strong chip evacuation and low clog risk, holding up even in dense fiber content. Common in aerospace, automotive, sporting goods, marine and wind energy.

  • Trimming: clean, accurate edges on composite panels.
  • Slotting: internal features with reduced wear in composite laminates.
  • HEM Profiling: detailed contours with minimal chipping or edge fray.
  • Ramping/Plunging: smooth entry into composite material with reduced force.
4 Flutes: 54-790/54-792/54-776/54-778
