How to use it
A straight plunge bit cuts a flat-bottomed slot as wide as its diameter. It is the everyday tool for dadoes, grooves, hinge mortises, inlay recesses and clearing out lettering. Both the tip and the sides cut, so it can plunge straight down into the work. Choose the shortest cutting length and overall length that still reach your depth. Every extra bit of length adds deflection and chatter, which shows up as a rough wall and shortens the bit's life. For deep slots, take several passes rather than one. The smallest diameters in this range are solid carbide for stiffness. The larger sizes are carbide tipped on a steel body. They run in handheld routers, router tables and CNC machines.
